Saving Money by Making Pizza at Home

Trying to save money in this economy? Try making your pizzas at home instead of just ordering out. Here are some simple and inexpensive crust and sauce recipes.

Tired of ordering pizzas that sap your budget? Looking for ways to make your own delicious, healthy pizzas that will save you both timea and money? Then look to the recipesbelow for pizza crusts and pizza sauces. Add favorite family ingredients and voila! A perfect pizza on a homemade budget.

Pizza Crusts

Crust #1 (5 minutes prep time; 2 hours rise time)

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups white or wheat flour
  • 1 ½ cups of water
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • ½ tablespoon salt

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in a standard mixer until of dough consistency.
  2. Set dough aside, covered, in a cool, dark place for approximately two hours.
  3. Spread dough onto well-greased pan for thick or thin crust; dip hands in water to help spread dough.
  4. Set dough aside and cover with desired sauce.
  5. Bake completed pizza at 400 degrees for 30 minutes.

This recipe is easy to make, can be stored in the refrigerator for days, and can be used with any kind of sauce.

Crust #2 (A Garlic Crust using a standard Bread Machine; 5 minutes prep time; 1 hour rise time)

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup warm water
  • 2 cups white or wheat flour
  • 2 cloves of minced garlic
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon yeast (placed in indented hole)

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients in order as listed.
  2. Make indented hole for placement of yeast.
  3. Place in standard bread machine on dough cycle.
  4. Once completed, turn out onto greased baking sheet.
  5. Cover with desired sauce and bake in 400 degree oven for 30 minutes.

This is a great “hands-off” recipe, since it uses a bread machine, thus allowing time to make sauce or handle other tasks.

Sauces

Sauce #1 (A White Sauce)

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup flour
  • 1 cup milk

Directions:

  1. Over a medium heat, combine melted butter and flour.
  2. Mix until of a thick consistency.
  3. Add milk until mixture becomes a thin sauce.
  4. Add more milk as needed to create thin sauce. Spread over desired crust and bake according to directions above.

This is a delicious sauce which can be used under tomatoes, chives, peppers, mushrooms or any other desired topping.

Sauce #2 (A Red Sauce)

Ingredients:

  • 2 ten-ounce cans of tomato puree
  • 15 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese, grated
  • ½ tablespoon fennel, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Mix all ingredients together in pan over medium heat.
  2. Stir constantly until of sauce consistency.
  3. Spread over desired crust and bake according to directions above.

Use any combination of these crusts and sauces to save money on ordering in pizzas. Quick and easy, they are just as easy as picking up the phone and waiting for your order to arrive; and, they are much, much cheaper.
