Keep puff pastry in your freezer so you can pull it out at anytime to combine with other simple ingredients. These appetizers are great for entertaining.

Puff pastry is very versatile and can be used with numerous ingredients to create hors d'oeuvres for a party at home. These recipes involve healthy ingredients with light puff pastry for a delicious entertaining food that is not messy and requires only a couple of bites.

Baked Brie with Toasted Walnuts

This appetizer takes almost an hour to complete between the preparation and baking time, but the simple ingredients create delicious savory flavors. This recipe serves about six.

Ingredients:

  • 1 package of thawed puff pastry
  • 4 sliced apples
  • Two 4-ounce brie cheese wheels
  • 2/3 cup walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Making the Baked Brie

  1. Preheat your oven to 405 degrees Fahrenheit. Lay out the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface and sprinkle walnuts in the middle of it, than layer some sliced apples on top of the walnuts. Do this for each puff pastry (there is usually two to a package). Next, place the Brie wheel on top of the apples. Coat one tablespoon of the honey on top of the Brie cheese in each puff pastry.
  2. Gather the edges of the puff pastry and bring up over the cheese wheel to create a canopy over the cheese. Sprinkle water on the seams and seal shut. Flip it over so the sealed side is down on the baking sheet (make sure wax paper is on the baking sheet first).
  3. Bake for 30 minutes in the oven. When you remove it from the oven, let it cool on a platter than garnish with more apple slices before cutting into pie slices.

Wrapped Asparagus

These simple appetizers combine the richness of vegetables along with a flaky crust. This recipe makes about fifteen.

Ingredients:

  • Asparagus spears
  • Handful of parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1 large sheet of puff pastry

Wrapping the Asparagus

  1. Lay out each piece of asparagus after it has been washed to the side. Lay out a sheet of puff pastry and sprinkle it with a handful of grated parmesan cheese, than slice the puff pastry lengthwise into strips that equal the amount of asparagus you have. Wrap each asparagus spear around with one of the puff pastry strips, spiraling them around the stalk. Pinch each end so it stays on the asparagus.
  2. Lay all of them down on a foil-line baking sheet and season generously with salt and pepper. Bake for about twenty minutes at 375 degrees in the oven.

Smoked Salmon Puffs

Makes about three dozen.

Ingredients:

  • 1 puff pastry sheet
  • One package smoked salmon
  • One 10-ounce can sour cream
  • 1/2 cup diced chives
  • Pepper to taste

Making the Salmon Puffs

  1. Cut the puff pastry sheet into 3 dozens even squares. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake for about ten minutes at 325 degrees. Remove them from the oven and top with a slice of the salmon, a small dollop of sour cream and a couple snipped chives.
  2. These are just a handful of puff pastry appetizers you can create on a budget to entertain your family and friends.
