Home menu planning may be the last thing an overworked person wants to do, but in the long run, meal planning makes the task of daily cooking easier and more rewarding.

Planning out a menu for the week may seem overwhelming, but once it becomes a habit, it's not difficult. It's well worth doing because menu planning has many benefits, including but not limited to the following:

Menu Planning Ends the “What’s for Dinner Tonight?” Dilemma

Proper menu planning brings an end to the terror of hearing that question because when asked, "What's for dinner tonight?," those who have properly planned meals can answer the question with confidence. Not only do meal planners know what is for dinner tonight, they also know what to serve for dinner every other night of the week as well.

Save Money with Meal Planning

Without proper menu planning families are more likely to resort to eating out or falling back on convenience food items purchased at the grocery store. That gets expensive and is a sure way to blow a family budget.

Save Time with Menu Planning

Meal planning saves time – no longer are multiple trips to the grocery store in a single week required. Without menu planning people often have to stop by the grocery store on the way home from work, or even worse, in the middle of preparing dinner because they simply don’t have all the ingredients on hand to prepare dinner.

Meal Planning Makes Eating Healthy Easier

Menu planning provides more control over what is eaten and thereby makes eating healthy easier. Finding healthy meals in restaurants can be a challenge! Sometimes even what appears to be a healthy menu item at a restaurant (such as a salad) is loaded with fat, sodium, and an ungodly amount of calories.

Even lower calorie options at restaurants may be laden with high amounts of sodium or sugar, so those concerned about sugar and sodium intake are much better off preparing food at home, particularly for those who focus on healthy meal plans.

Menu Planning Improves Family Life

With proper meal planning, families are more likely to sit down and have dinner together. Though it is possible to enjoy time chatting as a family over fast food or a pizza delivered to the home, there's something about a home cooked meal that pulls a family together.

Family togetherness can also be increased if cooking and cleaning up the kitchen becomes a family affair. To improve family life, all members of the family can be involved in cooking and cleaning up after dinner.

Meal Planning Helps Bring Variety to Meals

Without menu planning it's easy to fall into the rut of eating the same old thing over and over again. Even family favorites lose appeal over time when eaten excessively.

Sitting down with cookbooks or using meal planning software can bring about a good amount of variety while still leaving room in the menu plan for family favorites.

Though meal planning can easily be done without assistance, those who need a little extra help and don't mind paying a little for it might want to consider using a service such as Saving Dinner or E-Mealz.
